Merino Wool In Athletic Wear
When you are out for a long run, a strenuous hike or an afternoon on your bike what you wear is a very important factor in determining your level of comfort while exercising. Too tight, too loose, too heavy or too bulky and your experience can be very annoying. Finding the right type of clothing made from the right material is essential to any serious sportsman.
It might seem like wool would not be a good choice in for athletic wear, but this is simply not the case. Many types of wool are too coarse, would be too itchy and are otherwise unsuitable for this type of clothing, but merino wool is a light wool that is perfect for athletic wear for many reasons.
SOFT AND LIGHTWEIGHT
Merino wool is the softest sheep’s wool there is. This makes it comfortable to wear. It is also very light, so you don’t feel weighed down while wearing it, important while engaging in vigorous activity.
WARM
Like other wools, merino wool is wonderful for keeping in warmth. This is very helpful, but especially when combined with the characteristic of breathability. This type of wool has the ability to regulate body temperature.
ABSORBANT
Water absorbent like other wools, merino wool draws in moisture and keeps it away from the skin. This is a major advantage over synthetic materials that can trap moisture in, leaving you feeling wet and soggy. Merino wool also does not lose warmth when wet, like cotton does.
ANTIBACTERIAL
Wools tend to be somewhat antibacterial. This is helpful in athletic wear as it helps resist odors that are caused by sweating.
Choosing merino wool active wear over synthetic materials is a good choice for so many reasons. Another good one is the fact that it is natural and renewable. It is able to provide much that you cannot get from less breathable synthetic clothing.
The thought of running in wool clothing may sound absurd. Among other things we commonly associate wool with dry cleaning or at least hand washing. Who wants to do that to their exercise clothes? With Merino wear there is no need for it. It can actually be washed in the washing machine just like your other clothes!
If you are training for a race or planning on a major hike, or just exercise regularly in cool weather, merino wool lite athletic wear is the perfect choice when it comes to deciding what to wear. Many of the problems posed by synthetic materials and even cotton are not a problem with merino wool at all.
It is well worth your while to invest in some good quality merino wool for your exercise. You will feel more comfortable than you ever have before!
