Following Sheep: Wool Outerwear
Animals have the right idea when it comes to keeping warm in the winter. They naturally develop a thicker coat that protects them from the elements and keeps in their body warmth. Of course some of us also develop an extra layer. . . of fat in the fall and winter, but it is also necessary for us to put on extra layers externally, just as animals do.
In order to keep warm when it is extra cold we might wear long underwear. On top of that we will wear a shirt, sweater and then, when going outside bundle up in a warm coat, scarf, hat and gloves. Not only can we follow the animal’s example in wearing layers, we can also use the same thing some of them use to keep warm: wool!
Wool is naturally very warm. It keeps in body warmth and regulates temperature instead of overheating. It is lightweight and natural. It is known to be hypoallergenic.
Not all wool is of the scratchy, coarse time we often think of. Merino wool and Cashmere goat’s wool are both very soft and comfortable to wear right against the skin. Other kinds of wool are also suitable to be worn against the skin, though not as soft. However, some wool is simply too rough and raw to be comfortable for clothing. This can be used for wool outerwear.
Coats and jackets are wonderful when made of wool. They are toasty warm, but not as bulky as some coats filled with down or made of other materials. It also has a natural, smart look.
There is such a variety of wool outerwear that you can find something to suit you, whatever your personal style. Generally speaking, wool coats and jackets are rather more dressy than casual, but they are very versatile and look great for wearing out shopping, or to work or a night out.
Wool is an absorbent material. It absorbs twice as much water as cotton but does not feel heavy when wet like cotton does. Also, it keeps the moisture away from the skin and is still able to keep in warmth when it is wet, unlike cotton and other materials.
You can find a wide range of colors in wool outerwear. This is because wool dyes very well and thoroughly. You might find brightly colored coats made of wool that look great for years and years.
Wool is such a durable textile that most woolen clothing is cut in classic styles because it really will last for decades if well cared for. Cleaning wool doesn’t have to be too difficult. It repels dirt and has antibacterial qualities so it doesn’t need to be washed very often. Simply brushing it off regularly keeps it looking great.
Wool outerwear is the perfect and natural way to keep warm during the winter. Take a lesson from sheep and keep yourself as warm as they are in the winter by wearing their coat!
